Boathouse Row, a National Historic Landmark, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Boat and barge clubs at Boathouse Row came into existence in the 19th century to serve the recreational needs of Philadelphians. With the creation of the organization called “Schuylkill Navy” in 1858, rowing grew as a sport. Over the years, the growth of the sport brought Philadelphia fame as a major center for rowing.

Boathouse Row is a historic site situated between Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill River, near the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It consists of Victorian boathouses that house local rowing clubs. These clubs are part of a group known as the Schuylkill Navy, which was founded in 1858.

Several regattas and races are held at Boathouse Row, the biggest of these is the Dad Vail Regatta. Other major regattas include the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the Philadelphia Youth Regatta, the Navy Day Regatta, the Independence Day Regatta and the Head of the Schuylkill. Although most regattas and races are held between the months of May and July, there is never an end on activities at the site since there are clubs holding programs for rowers of every skill level throughout the year.

The clubs that comprise the Schuylkill Navy include the University Barge Club, Undine Barge Club, Bachelors Barge Club, Malta Boat Club, Crescent Boat Club, Vesper Boat Club, College Boat Club of the University of Pennsylvania, Fairmount Rowing Association, Penn Athletic Club Rowing Association and Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club.

Finding a convenient accommodation near Philadelphia's Boathouse Row is never a problem since a wide variety of hotels is available in the city to meet your needs. There are luxurious hotels for those traveling in style, as well as cheap hotels for those traveling on a budget.

Restaurants near Boathouse Row offer some of the most inventive and mouth-watering cuisine in Pennsylvania. Whether you're craving for traditional home cooking, Italian delicacies, seafood or a limitless selection of international dishes, there will surely be something to please your palette.
