Exciting Fall Events in the Smoky Mountains

It's funny how certain states/regions become well known for their seasonal attributes. North and South Carolina's coasts draw flocks of visitors every summer to the Outer Banks, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and Charleston. The Washington, D.C. area makes a splash of color when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom each spring. Colorado's Rockies boast several expert-level ski resorts that flourish during winter months. And then there's fall in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Changing of the Leaves

The changing of the leaves in the Smokies resembles an artist's palette of color splashed across the mountainside. Depending on the weather, the green of summer transforms into vibrant colors starting around the middle of October.

As the leaves fade from green to yellow in the upper elevations, you'll begin to notice a cascading effect. The colors trickle down the mountains and into the underlying valleys much the same way a fountain would overflow. As the season progresses, the yellow turns to orange, then red. Because the change happens slowly and at different elevations, you find a beautiful progression of bright colors over a period of time.

This spectacular phenomenon only lasts from two to four weeks at its peak. This means the Smokies will be overflowing with visitors, so it's best to make reservations now.

Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival

Not just one festival, a whole county full! Running for about four weeks in September through October each year, the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival spans Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville.

You'll find classic car shows, bluegrass music, barbecues, Halloween parties and much more.

Dollywood's Barbecue and Bluegrass Festival

One of two highly anticipated events hosted by Dollywood during the fall, the Barbecue and Bluegrass Festival delivers just what it says. Guest chefs from around the country gather to cook up some of the most unique and delectable barbecue you've ever tasted. Chicken, ribs, brisket, burgers… you name it and you'll likely find some during this event.

The Smokies simply wouldn't be the Smokies without bluegrass music. Some of the most popular names in bluegrass will entertain you, including Ricky Skaggs, Riders in the Sky and Williams & Clark Expedition.

Dollywood's National Gospel & Harvest Celebration

In addition to bluegrass, Dollywood will also host its National Gospel & Harvest Celebration. This event will feature an all-star lineup of music deeply rooted in the spiritual traditions we've grown to love. The park will also be filled with crafters and artisans as well as specially prepared fall dishes that feature the season's best local ingredients.

Gatlinburg Craftsmen's Fair

If Dollywood leaves you longing for more arts and crafts, the Gatlinburg Craftsmen's Fair can fill your hunger. More than 200 artists will be on hand to create and/or sell their handiwork. Look for a wide variety of goods, including those made from pottery, wood, stained glass and more.
