Family Vacation Savings Ideas

Submitted by cbelden

When was the last time you took a vacation? If you're like most people in recent months, you may think that this year's family trip is not feasible on your current budget. But while you may not be able to afford the luxury of a vacation with all the trimmings, this year's excursion doesn't need to be put off. In fact, if you have an open mind, it's more possible than ever to have a quality family adventure.

So where will you go? How will you get there? What can you do during your hard-earned time off that can be soothing to your senses and gentle on your wallet? Here are several suggestions for your next budget-savvy vacation opportunity.

Decide On A Destination

Your destination is as important to the budget for your trip as how you're planning on getting there. If you're bringing the whole family, activities once you've reached your destination are important as well, especially for smaller children who ask for lots of entertainment. Try making a list of all the travelers that will be attending, and then asking them to select three things that they would like to do on their vacation this year.

Once you know what all your passengers would like to do with their time away from home, take into consideration the distance to travel and the length of your vacation time. If you try to make a trip that's too long with only few days to enjoy it, you may try to get there more quickly by driving at less than fuel-efficient speeds, driving up your gas expenses. You may also feel stress from the hustle of family travel, making you more inclined to make impulse purchases at airports and pit stops. If possible, choose a location closer to home to save on gas and travel time.

Choose Your Transportation

Is the family van the least expensive transportation for your money? It might not be, if you consider your options and your destination. Depending on where you and your family are headed, there may be other options that are easier on your budget.

If your trip takes you far from home but not far enough to warrant airline tickets, consider taking a cross-country bus or train. Busses travel everywhere in the country and they run constantly, so there will be fewer unnecessary stops and less travel time lost. Trains are an adventure in themselves, with panoramic views of the American countryside, dining halls and even bedrooms available while you're en route to your destination. Both are an excellent choice for families looking for something a little different.

If you do decide to fly, book your tickets well in advance online for additional travel savings. Most airlines provide discounts to online shoppers, and airfare traditionally rises as the departure date draws near. The further out you complete your purchase, the more likely you are to save.

Last but not least, if you decide to pile in the family vehicle, make sure that it's been well maintained before hitting the road. Fully inflated tires and new fluids will help with fuel efficiency on long trips, lowering fuel expenses. It will also keep the ride smooth for any young ones who have trouble sleeping during a bouncy drive.

Investigate Accommodations

Expensive chain hotels aren't always the best way to go for family vacations. Bed and breakfasts often have couple and family rates that dwarf those of most popular hotel chains, with a more intimate appeal. Small mom-and-pop motels also offer significantly discounted rates, although you may have to look in the phone book instead of online to find their contact information. Finally, if you're staying within a reasonable distance of a friend of relative, ask well in advance if you can pay a visit for a few days. The extra drive may cost a little extra, but it will ultimately save on the accommodation expenses.
