Have a Holiday and get Fit at the Same TimeSubmitted by Celeste Wed, 16 Jan 2008
The concept of going on holiday, eating well, resting, and getting fit might seem impossible to travellers, but it is not impossible. There are options that allow you to travel, see the world and get some exercise at the same time. One of the popular routes to achieving this dream is visiting the Kruger National Park in South Africa.
Tour operators work with the Kruger National Park authorities to create the ideal holiday, involving a three-day work on the wild side. The package does include morning/evening safari drives through the nature reserve, but it is the walk that travellers are most interested in. Getting out and being completely surrounded by nature is a completely different experience than viewing it from a vehicle. The experience allows you to see the wilderness up close and have the opportunity to smell, hear and touch nature. You have a complete sensual experience of being one with the world. Travellers are picked up by tour operators from the nearest city, Johannesburg, and are driven straight to the nature reserve. The first afternoon is spent driving through the park to get a feeling for what you are about to experience. During all drives and walks a professional guide accompanies you as a safety precaution. The guide will also tell you about the land, including the plant and animal life. Travellers will be escorted to the base camp on their second day arrival, where they will have opportunity to relax. The guide will brief visitors on the plans for the next few days. Day three is when the adventure will begin. Guides take travellers for walks and hikes both in the mornings and in the afternoons. During walks, guides will tell visitors about tracking and point out different animals en route. There is nothing like exercising out in the wilderness where travellers can breathe in fresh air from nature. The hikes are not over-powering and are perfect for travellers looking for an opportunity to get their blood flowing. The first walk is during the morning and then visitors can rest before taking an afternoon walk. This will give travellers enough time to relax and enjoy the scenery. The entire time visitors will be exposed to the wildlife in the park, including numerous species of antelope and possible viewing of the famous big five, which are the elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo. There are hundreds of birdlife in the nature reserve. There are also other mammals that are well known, such as the hippo and giraffe, which roam the reserve. The holiday doesn’t end there but continues at the lodge. The package is available during June/July. Tour operators advise that guests pack comfortable clothing that isn’t too bright as it might alert the animals. Walks take place during the morning and afternoon, so sunscreen is essential. Going to the Kruger National Park is a great way to get back to nature and enjoy the pleasures that come with it. The Kruger National Park is the largest nature reserve in Africa with millions of animals, birds and wildlife for visitors to enjoy. Walking through the reserve is a once in a lifetime experience. With the guide explaining interesting facts and the wonderful scenery around, the Kruger National Park is the best type of treadmill to visit on holiday.
