The Cuisine of Tenerife

Submitted by artavia.seo

One of my favourite things about going on holiday is discovering the different dishes and styles of cooking used in the area I'm visiting. You find this even when travelling within the UK, though nowadays many of the popular dishes are found country-wide (take a look at pasties). But from the seafood-rich coastline of South-Western France to the refried beans of Mexico, trying something new, and discovering that it's delicious, either in its simplicity or its complexity, is a joy.

Which is why I have taking a recent interest in the foods of Tenerife, and why I would advocate that people take holidays to Tenerife not only for the beaches and the weather, but also for the food.

To begin with, I have always enjoyed goat's cheese. I find myself drawn to Tenerife almost solely for this. Goat's cheese is the main cheese produced on Tenerife, and the amount of variety you get in the cheeses that can be made from goat's milk may be astounding to those who are familiar with only the soft, spreadable varieties.

That is not to say that the soft cheeses are the lesser, they are in fact my favourite, but to neglect the aged hard cheeses, or the semi-firm cheeses, such as feta, is to do a disservice to goats and their cheese. And whatever the cheese, the distinctive tang that goat's cheese has is always recognisable.

I, myself, adore cheese, and could probably be motivated to take a few Tenerife holidays on the strength of that alone, but I appreciate that for many of you a little more variety might be needed.

This is where the fish come in. Being an island, you may expect a formidable selection of delectable fish from Tenerife, and Tenerife does not disappoint. Breams, porgies and blennies, as well as mackerel and sardines, can all be found; fried eels too, if you are tickled by something a little different.

As far as meat goes, you can expect the standard European fare of beef, poultry and pork, though note that there are some delicious pork dishes particular to the island, as well as rabbit and goat, which each have their own distinct taste and texture and I would hasten you to try.

I have managed to write myself a little out of space, and I haven't even mentioned wrinkly potatoes, mojo or the variety of confectionary you can enjoy in Tenerife, but I hope that what is here has appealed to you. With an abundance of cheap holidays to Tenerife available, I'm honestly surprised that more people aren't going purely to sample the cuisine. I hope that this article has described something to whet your appetite.
