One of Venice's most well-known exhibition is the famous Venice Biennale. The Venice Biennale has been for over a century one of the world's most prestigious cultural institutions.

Since its origin (1895) the Biennale is leading the way in promoting new artistic trends. The Biennale has been organizing for much many years international events in all contemporary arts, according to a multidisciplinary model that characterizes its uniqueness. It is one of the world's most prestigious institution both for the Venice International Film Festival (62 editions), the International Art Exhibition (51 editions) and the International Architecture Exhibition (9 editions) and the great tradition of the Music Festival (49 editions) and Theatre Festival (37 editions) continues inside this framework; now they are also flanked by the Dance Festival (3 editions).
In the same fields, the Biennale promotes editorial initiatives. Its visibility is high in all media, both national and international. Through the ASAC (Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts) the Biennale also takes care of the preservation of records about its history.

The legislative decree of reform of January 2004 has also changed the Biennale into a Foundation. The challenge of the new Foundation is to revive the potential of the Biennale and its uniqueness of attraction pole of excellence, not only during the major exhibitions, but also in the artistic production in all sectors throughout the years.

The locations of the Foundation, receiving an international audience increasingly large (320,000 visitors a year) are not the Foundation's property and are made available by law by the Venice Municipality - the Giardini di Castello (visual arts and architecture), Palazzo del Cinema and the Palazzo del Casino at the Lido (cinema) - , or obtained through multi-year agreements with the Navy and the Revenue Agency - the Arsenale (visual arts and architecture) the Teatro alle Tese and the Teatro Piccolo Arsenale (dance, music, theater).

This year's Art Biennale will be open to the public from Sunday 7th of June to Sunday 22th of November 2009, at the Giardini dell'Arsenale and in various places in Venice, under the title Making Words, and directed this year by Daniel Birnbaum. The varnishing will take place on 4,5 and 6 June 2009. inside the frame of the event, two Golden Lions Honorary awards will be awarded to artists Yoko Ono and John Baldessari - among the most important personalities in the art of our time.

In addition, a renewal project will take place at the same time with the 53rd exhibition provides that the arsenal will be connected to the city with a new bridge; the former Italian Pavilion at the Arsenale will become the "Padiglione Italia", while the Italian Pavilion at the Giardini will become the "Palazzo delle Esposizioni della Biennale".
In the new Italian Pavilion at the Tese delle Vergini dell'Arsenale the Collaudi exhibition will be staged by Beatrice Buscaroli and Luca Beatrice.
