What to Do If You Lose Your Wallet on Holiday

Submitted by yootravel

If you are on holiday or a business trip and lose your wallet, do not panic. You can often replace the items in your wallet and get help. You can try to avoid losing your wallet or having it removed from you by a pickpocket if you are mindful of your surroundings and stay alert. In order to minimize the loss in case you do happen to lose your wallet when you are on holiday, you should never carry all of your money with you when you are out. You should keep money in a hotel safe and only take what you need when you go out sightseeing, the beach, dining, shopping or anything else while you are on your holiday.

If you do happen to lose your wallet when you are on your trip, you should do these 3 things right away:

1. Find a police station

the first thing that you need to do is to report the crime. It could very well be that someone picked at your wallet when you were in a crowd. You should go to the police station to tell them of the missing wallet so that they can make a report. Be aware that they will not likely find the person who took your wallet, but that you will have a written report so that you can replace documents easier that were in your wallet.

2. Call your credit card companies

the next thing that you want to do is call your credit card companies and report the stolen cards. They can put an immediate freeze on your accounts and debit cards so that no one can use the cards. Thieves who look for tourists as well as any other type of pickpocket generally are looking for cash. You can minimize this loss by using less cash when travelling and relying more on debit and credit cards that can be stopped and replaced. When you phone your credit card company, tell them that you are without money and need immediate replacement of the cards.

3. Go to a travel aid society

there are traveller's aid societies in most places that can help you if you lose your wallet when you are on a trip. They can help you get the money you need wired to a bank in the area so that you can replace what you lost. They can also help you with issues like identification. If you need identification to get back home, they can help you take steps to replace your identification so that you will be able to return from your trip.

It can be a harrowing experience to lose your wallet when you are on a trip. The best thing that you can do is not to panic, call your credit card companies and stop all transactions that might occur on your credit or debit cards, have them replaced, have money wired to you and see about replacing any identification. You should make a police report whether or not your wallet has been stolen or lost as in some cases, someone who finds the wallet may turn it back in. In some instances, if your pocket is picked, the thief may just take the cash and toss the wallet aside.
