Crewe Alexandra Football Club.
History
Crewe Alexandra F.C are a football team based in Crewe, Cheshire, England. Their home stadium is Alexandra Stadium in Gresty Road. They are nicknamed the Railwaymen due to Crewe’s link with the Railway industry.
The team were founded in 1877 as Crewe Football Club after becoming a separate organisation to the popular Crewe Cricket Club.
Crewe F.C were one of the first teams to found Division 2 in 1892. In the 1920’s they rejoined the official Football League and in 1936 and 1937 they won their first honours after winning the Welsh Cup before being banned from re-entering.
Dario Gradi
In 1983 Dario Gradi was appointed manager of Crewe Alexandra F.C after they narrowly avoided being voted out of the Football League.
Gradi went on to become one of the sports most celebrated managers and became well known for developing new talent, letting Steve Walters become the youngest player to wear a Crewe shirt at 16 years and 119 day old when he played against Portsmouth United.
Gradi’s efforts soon paid off when Crewe were promoted to the Third Division in 1989.
Then in 1997, Gradi led Crewe to the dizzying heights of Division One after victory over Brentford in the Division Two final, and kept the club there until 2002, despite an overall club income of which many more lowly clubs could not survive.
After a single season in the Division Two the club were awarded promotion back to the First Division at the end of the 2002-03 season, after finishing in second place; the first time the club had ever finished in the top two of any division.
As of 2007, Dario Gradi was the longest serving manager in English league football; he celebrated his 1,000th game in control of Crewe on 20 November 2001 - an away game at Carrow Road, the home of Norwich City Football Club, and completed 24 years in charge of the club.
On 20th April 2007, Gradi announced that he will be taking up a new role as Technical Director of Crewe Alexandra F.C and will be gradually introducing Steve Holland as the new team manager.
