The Great Smoky Mountains, to give them their full title, are situated in the southern area of the Appalachian Mountains. First established as a national park in the 1930s the range gets its name from the natural mist or haze that forms over the top of the mountains. This natural haze is caused by a combination of naturally formed hydrocarbons and high humidity. It means that the blue mist is visible even from a very short distance, which adds to the natural beauty and wonder of the region.

Tourists flock to the region every year because of the wide range of activities and sights on offer.
