You should talk with potential roommates about what their daily routine or schedule looks like. Your objective is to find out just how different your schedules are. Some difference is good as both you and your roommate will need time alone from time. However keep in mind if a situation will exist in which your schedules are completely opposites it may not work too well. For instance they're up and getting around the apartment every night until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning and you're one who goes to bed at 10:00 or 11:00.

You'll want to discuss pets. Are they allowed? Does yours or theirs need special consideration? Consider issues around things like shedding, food, cleanup, and any and everything else you can think of. Now is the time to establish the ground rules. By the way, smoking or allowing it in the apartment is not a practice I'd recommend because of the residual effects of smoking.

To close out you should spend some time talking about apartment dwelling cleanliness. Talk about how clean is clean enough? Everybody has their own levels of acceptable cleanliness. You'll want to make sure your apartment roommate is atleast somewhat compatible with yours.
