Do You Need a Credit Card? (Part 2)

In the last post, we saw how a credit card can be to your great advantage. With that said, you would probably answer the question in the title with a resounding YES. However, as I also mentioned in the last post, there is more to life than the good things. We always have to look at issues in a balanced manner. As such, here some downsides to using credit cards.

The greatest advantage of a card can also be its greatest disadvantages – convenience. Most people make use of credit cards because it means not having to carry large amounts of cash all the time. Having a credit card means that you can make urgent purchases any time even if you do not have the cash on hand. However, if you are not careful, then the convenience of swiping that card just might get you in financial trouble. My advice is for you to watch how often (and for how much) you use the card for and not to let the convenience get the best of you.

Having a credit card can also affect your financial mindset. Some people tend to think that just because they have a certain credit limit, they have that money to use for purchases. That is, of course, untrue as the money is not really yours. It is basically borrowing money on interest – and high rates at that. The trick is in thinking like this all the time and paying off your balances on time. Otherwise, you would probably find yourself with credit card debt.

The bottom line is knowing what you need the credit card for and laying down your limits at the outset. Discipline and responsibility are key to managing credit cards wisely.
