The Playstation Portable Reigns Supreme

If you take a plane ride you can see the impact technology has had on our lives. People use this downtime to catch up on work via their laptop. It is a busy world and long trips are the perfect opportunity to get some work done. Kids are no different. They need something to help pass the time when they are on the go with their family and friends. The Playstation Portable is the perfect companion when sitting in front of the home television is out of the question.

The PSP system, the abbreviated name of the Sony Playstation Portable, is not the first portable gaming system. Nintendo beat Sony to the drawing board when it debuted the Gameboy in 1989. The Gameboy helped pave the way for portable gaming systems. But there was still a lot to be desired. The early Gameboy's had very basic functions and the games were very monochromatic. The screen was a decent size considering how small the unit was, but it lacked the versatility and graphics of the Super Nintendo game unit.

Thanks to the Nintendo pioneers, the Portable Playstation crew had a place to begin their design. The Playstation was debuted in 1994 and was the fifth generation in gaming consoles. This 32-bit wonder had incredible graphics that blew the competitors completely out of the gaming waters. It had a wide variety of games for every palate and the controllers were a wonder unto themselves. They were the first controllers to have a plethora of buttons to control every aspect of the game. A gamer felt they were actually inside the game.

After many years atop the gaming market, Xbox rose as the top competitor. Regardless of how advanced the graphics were on the Playstation, the Xbox had a generation of computer designers on its side and blew the doors off the Sony product. At this point, Sony realized it had an untapped market and began work on developing the Playstation Portable.

In 2004, Sony introduced the Playstation Portable as a unique hand-held gaming console. The Playstation Portable game library and graphics, along with the memory system completely eclipsed the Gameboy. It could be hooked into a computer via a USB cable and games could be downloaded directly onto a memory stick. There are some problems with the PSP system, but those problems revolve mainly around playing music or movies. It remains to be seen whether or not a portable Xbox system will be developed. At this point in time though, Sony reigns supreme.
