How To Write Headlines That Get More Leads & Increase Sales Conversions!Submitted by jji6m3z0lw Thu, 13 Mar 2008
Headlines are the most important part of an advertisement. They are the first thing read and if they fail to do their job - they are the last.
A headline should stop your ideal customer dead in their tracks and compel them to read the full advertisement. It says, 'To be rewarded with this wonderful benefit, keep reading.' It teases and hooks without giving anything away. It arouses curiosity and makes you eager to know the full story. An effective headline also filters out less-qualified prospects. But most importantly, the right headline will generate highly targeted leads and increase sales conversions for your business. So what’s the quickest and easiest way to come up with headline ideas that will work well for your product? First, take advantage of the research and testing conducted by successful advertising writers. Serious mail order advertisers started scientifically testing their sales copy in the early 1900’s. And they discovered most of what we know today about writing sales copy, including headlines. In 1932 mail-order advertising writer, John Caples revealed 29 proven formulas for getting attention with headlines in his classic book Tested Advertising Methods. Today copywriters are using those same 29 headline formulas with just as much success. Why? Because people still buy for the same reasons. Having access to all the research and testing done by previous advertisers gives modern copywriters a huge advantage. There are appeals we can confidently rely on to work consistently. We can use rules and formulas that have been tested by others (at their expense) - as templates for our own work. To identify the right headline for selling your product you’ll want to test a lot of them against each other. So do some market research. Collect all the current and past advertisements you can find for products similar to yours. Then write as many of your own headlines as you can. Use the tested ones you found as templates. As you write, think about your target audience. The ideal prospect for the product you’re selling. Consider the concerns and frustrations they’re feeling. Imagine yourself in their position. Why would they want the solution you offer? How will this product benefit and improve their experience? You want to construct an offer that’s irresistible to them, that’ll compel them to continue reading. Here’s a list of 7 ways you can make your headlines get more attention and results. 1. Hook them with a cliffhanger, a teaser. 2. Offer a fast, simple solution. 3. Turn your headline into a question. 4. Use phrases like 'how to' and 'how I' to start your headline. 5. Include your main offer in the headline. 6. Promise them something of value for reading the rest of your copy. 7. Place emphasis with size, boldness and capitalization on a word or phrase that highlights the benefit. In addition, always use a positive appeal and write with an upbeat tone. Make your message clear, specific and believable. There should be no doubt about who it’s for and that it’s going to benefit them.
