Coursework topics can be selected in various ways. But there are some rules that can help you in choosing the right topic.
1) Definition of the problem under study: Now the nature of the problem selected should be defined. This will determine the scope of the problem and also its nature and character. For example, if we wish to study the problem of alcoholism among labor, then first of all we should define what we mean by the term alcoholism. We have to be clear in our mind as to what quantity of liquor consumed per day indicates alcoholism.
2) Analysis of problem by making a schedule: After the problem is defined, we have to analyze the various elements, constituents or factors involved in the problem so that a detailed and systematic list of these may be formulated. It is only when a detailed list of the problem is available that the relevant information can be systematically gathered.
3) Determination of scope: The scientific study of a problem implies systematic investigation into a limited and well defined subject matter. Without setting limits, no phenomenon can be studied. Accordingly, before the beginning of a research, it is imperative to determine the scope of the problem. In determining the scope of a problem the following delimitations can be made use of:
a) Political and Administrative divisions such as nation, state, town, city, locality etc.
b) Professional classes, rich and poor people, labor etc. This means limiting the problem on the basis of economic level or considerations.
c) Child, youth, old etc. This involves determination of the problem on biological basis.
d) Married, unmarried, literate, illiterate that is determination on the basis of social nature.
e) Hilly areas, plains, deserts etc., i.e. determination of the scope of a problem upon geographical basis.
These are some of the few ways of delimitation that you need to do before starting your project.
4) Determination of Time limit: Any good project requires the services of trained investigators and considerable amount of money. Accordingly, it is essential to set a time limit for it. Some problems are of topical importance and all problems undergo gradual change. In both cases, if the results of the project take too long period, the validity of the results will be doubtful on account of change of conditions or the problem may no longer be quite relevant. While fixing the time limit it has to be kept in mind that the time and money consumed should not be excessive; it should not also be too short. In the first event the character of the problem may be changed during the period of survey and then much money and energy would be wasted. If the time is very short, the results may lack reliability on account of insufficient care, absence of check or cross check.
5) Determination of data collection and analysis tools: Before choosing the course work topics, you need to be sure about the tools that you are going to use for collecting data and analyzing them.
