Education EssaySubmitted by EugeneArticle Thu, 30 Jul 2009
Education essay will deal with different issues related to education and its impact in different spheres of society.
Never had there been in the history of mankind an explosion of education as vast and varied as one sees in recent times. Everything- old even if useful, is being discarded and replaced by new substitutes for better utility and easier facility. Review, research, feedback, evaluation have entered into every organization be it big or small, with the sole purpose of finding means for innovation and implementations. In short, progress has come to be accepted as knowledge based rather than power based. Knowledge has become a very vital commodity in the business of rapid advancement for excellence. And excellence, which is interplay of efficiency, effectiveness, competition and consistency, is created by individuals, not organizations. This has revealed, in no uncertain times, that one can ill afford to ignore the brightest students and continue catering for the average learners in the classrooms. This poses a challenging situation to the teacher. A bright child, a fast learner, a creative student, a slow scholar- all present a problem situation for the teachers. A bright child often finds the classroom learning process ineffective and unrewarding. He does not find a suitable outlet for his energies and abilities in a classroom left unattended, he tends to revolt against parents and teachers, or use his superior intelligence in mischief, indiscipline and anti social activities. If recognized being one of the minority group he may develop a boastful conceit. There is therefore a need to handle the bright child delicately and carefully, so that he will eventually become not a nuisance, but a pride and asset to the country. It is not difficult for a teacher to identify bright children. No elaborate psychological tests are necessary. The bright children exhibit an innate capacity to learn at a faster rate, an abiding curiosity and a willingness to take risks. In a classroom situation, their academic achievements, participation in co curricular and extra curricular activities, and their eagerness to learn new things are striking indications of their characteristic. Three approaches are in vogue for dealing with the bright children. The first is acceleration, the second approach is known as ability grouping and the third approach is known as enrichment. Out of these approaches the enrichment program seems to be best suited for our classroom situations. There is no need to label the bright children and segregate them from the rest. The teacher should provide them enriched learning experiences and simultaneously utilize their potential for the benefit of the other children in the class. The bright should be given the responsibility of guiding and leading the group. The teacher has simply to play the role of a bright student; leading the group of bright children and helping them help their groups in turn. Informal research findings have shown that children best learn from their peers, if academic atmosphere is made to prevail. So the teacher should convert the education material into various activity components such as discussions, debates, display projects, excursions etc.
