No matter who you are everyone has a book waiting to be written inside of them. Everyone has a story to tell and someone in the world is an audience waiting for your story to be told. You may have thoughts of writing about your experiences in life, your hobbies or teaching someone how to do something. The number of topics and the number of stories that we could tell if we applied our minds are unlimited.
Telling our story used to be a cumbersome and depressing process. In order for our book to reach the masses it must first meet the market. The gatekeepers to the market used to be publishers. They were the holders of all power to authors. Briefly, the tale would go like this; you start work on the book of your dreams. Each day you toil to write a few chapters suffering from writer's block along the way and fear that no-one will want your book. Mid way through your book you send the first chapter off to a few publishers with a letter painstakingly written and rewritten again and again, requesting publication. After weeks or months you may get a curt two line sentence in the mail that shatters your dreams. The letter acknowledges receipt of your work of art, but doesn't say it is, and declines to publish.
There used to be an alternative and still is. If you really believed in your book and you had the money you could self publish. This means that you would become the publisher as well as author, distributor, sales representative and graphic artist. Obviously, it was not an easy or cheap option fraught with the difficulty of undertaking a task that you lack the knowledge and skill to acheive. There were a number of famous writers who elected to go this route after rejection by the name publishers and were wiser for it.
In today's world we are blessed with technology and the demand for instant products. This is good news for everyone that has a story to tell but lacks a publisher to tell it. Now you can become your own self publisher cheaply and easily. If you want to get your story told or even just test the market for a book that you hope to be traditionally published all you need to do is create an ebook.
Creating an ebook is cheap and easy. All it requires at the most basic level is for your story to be typed up, proof read and turned into a pdf document. That's it - the book is done! If you want to entice people to buy your book you may need a nice graphics cover. Again, this is simple all you need to do is search the net for free or cheap ebook covers and play around with photoshop putting in your title. From the time that your book is typed up this whole process should take less than a half hour and cost less than $50.00. Of course, this is at the most basic level and you can always upgrade to using ebook creator software and graphics especially designed for you at any time.
Technology has made it so incredibly cheap and simple for all of us to be heard in the world and to tell our stories but there is still a place for the traditional publisher in this world. One of the most enjoyable things to do on a lazy weekend is to browse a bookstore and pick up the books and admire the photography, the layout and the presentation. As we are free to enjoy both options that the world has brought us there is really no excuse for not letting that dormant writer out and telling your story.
