Freelance Writing Success - How to Survive and Thrive as a Freelance Writer

Submitted by Hinds

Deciding to start a freelance writing career is fairly easy. Achieving lasting freelance writing success is more difficult. Finding steady work as a freelancer can be difficult, especially in the beginning. Freelance writers have to constantly look for work and promote themselves in order to stay ahead of the competition. Although freelance writing can be stressful at times, it's a career well worth the effort. Here are some tips to help you find your way to freelance writing success.

1. Have more than one niche. If you only do one type of writing for only one audience, you'll have nothing to fall back on if work dries up in your niche field. Successful freelance writers diversify their talents and learn new skills to make themselves more marketable. If you write pet-related articles for websites, you might also write for pet blogs. If you do financial writing for newsletters, you might also write financial articles for magazines or websites. But beyond that, if you know several subject matters well, you can write articles and blogs on a few topics, as well as newsletters and ezines for a few others.

2. Don't commit too much time to any one client. Regardless of how much a client is paying you or how much work he has to give to you right now, there are all sorts of unknown factors that could happen to make you dispensable. The client could go bankrupt, or he could decide to hire a full-time employee to do the freelance work you're doing, or he might have to make some budget cuts. He might decide the blog you're writing isn't bringing in enough new business to justify paying you to write the blog anymore. Anything could happen. If you're relying on one client for a steady paycheck, and you find yourself suddenly without that client, who knows how much time you'll have to spend looking for new work to make up for that lost money. If you work for several clients at once, and one client stops using your services, you still have the others to fall back on until you can find a new client to replace the lost income.

3. Take advantage of freelance writing resources. Subscribe to freelance writing magazines and visit websites dedicated to freelance writers. These can be great sources for freelance writing articles that will greatly benefit your career. Staying on top of market trends and learning what your competition is doing is important, and such resources can help you stay on top of these issues and more.
