There is more to writing articles than just making sure you report the right facts. How you report those facts goes a long way to how well you actually connect with your target market. The truth is, if you're not speaking their language, you're not going to get the message across. This article is going to give you a few examples of what I'm talking about. Hopefully, this will help you in communicating with YOUR target market.
Let's say we're writing an article on natural health cures for the elderly. Okay, the first thing you have to understand is that you're dealing with a pretty serious topic. These are people who are probably ill and looking for help. So the last thing you want to do is write in a humorous way. There is nothing funny about being sick. You'll want to avoid slang, jokes and anything that isn't appropriate to the subject. You also want to inject hope into the article, so at the same time, it has to be uplifting.
What about if we're writing an article for a new online role playing game that's targeting teens? Well, in that case, we want to take the opposite tact. We want to keep the article light and humorous and at the same time convey the excitement of the game itself. We can use slang, jokes and anything that relates to a teen audience. If it's young teens, we want to keep it clean. If we're dealing with an older crowd, we can get a little off color. The last thing we want to do is be serious and boring. The kids won't read the article if we are.
Essentially, what you want to do is take your subject matter, analyze it and then determine who it's targeting. By doing that, you can figure out what kind of voice you're going to use in the article itself. Now, not everybody writes well in all voices. Therefore, you have to know which topics you can tackle and which ones to stay away from. Over time, you'll get good at this. It just takes a little bit of practice.
