What do you think about goals in life

It is very essential to have goals in life. A goal is a target set before us to achieve what we want in life that needs us to act and satisfies our wants. Looking at the world around us, we can decide what we want to achieve and set goals. This could be materialistic or spiritual or any other thing that we want to attain in our lifetime.

Goals can be set by us by the process of thinking and questioning what you want to achieve. This is not easy. It requires us to examine our needs deeply and set goals for ourselves. Some goals may be within our reach, while others might be beyond our reach. It is not easy to become a millionaire. So, we should not have unreachable goals. We should realize what is within our reach. For this, the thought process is very important. Real goals should be such that they fit into our value system and our cultural rules. This will set us on the right track.

Some goals are short term goals and others are long term goals. These are time dependent. ‘Short term goals’ are goals that we set to achieve urgently, in a short period of time. This might not give us satisfaction in the long run. This will give only temporary satisfaction and relieve the immediate pressure. Sometimes such short term goals might be unsatisfying in the long term. ‘Long term goals’, on the other hand are goals that really satisfy you. They are built up of shorter goals and intermediate goals which help us reach the ultimate goals set by us. Some have ‘life goals’ which is what they want to achieve in life. This is really what we want others to think of us after we are gone. The best way would be to think you are writing your own obituary. This will tell you what you want to be in life.

The anticipation felt when we think about the goal is also very important. It gives us a satisfaction that we are moving towards the goal set by us. We look into the future when we have already attained the goal and we feel happy. The problem arises only when the satisfaction overcomes us and leads to our not working towards our goal.

It does not matter if we are not satisfied. We should only beware of – feeling that a goal is unreachable, feeling too satisfied and not reaching the goal set by you. You can help others reach their target by highlighting their capacities and making them feel positive. You can also influence them to set the right goals, by telling them about their limitations.

The goals set should have an objective, a target, a vision, a mission and an outcome. They should be performance oriented.

When we have achieved a goal the satisfaction that is obtained is unimaginable. It spurs us on to do better and set more goals in life. Goals should be realistic and reasonable. Materialistic goals make us work hard and earn enough to reach our target. Spiritual goals make us reach within ourselves and realize our inner wants and needs. Both are necessary in life. So, have reasonable goals and set a time limit and attain your target.
